Quite simply Yes! Of course we are a slightly biased in our opinions. Typically, the average custom designed static web site runs about $2,500. An average custom designed web site with some dynamic content such as an on-line catalogue, and content editor, order form, hit counters, and various other administrative tools runs about $4,500. Add another $1,500 for full blown eCommerce with on-line credit card processing.
Please note, these prices are approximate, and vary depending upon many factors including but not limited to quality and quantity of creative design elements (flash animations etc.) and size of your on-line catalogue, depth of content on Web Site, etc. etc.

 Why is there such price disparity among web developers?

This is a difficult question to answer, one which we ask ourselves from time to time. There isn't enough room on this page to explain all of the factors that influence the cost of a Web Site. So we'll try to keep it simple. To a certain degree the old adage "You get what you pay for!" applies. Now that statement may be a bit crass, but there is a certain amount of truth in it. Somewhere along the line "wanna-be" Web Developers forgot how much work is involved to design, develop, test, implement and support a piece of business logic (a computer program or subroutine). Perhaps it's because the newer technologies always boast that they make "things" easy. Well it's simply not necessarily the reality. Things are more complicated and have more places to break than ever before! And as such demand highly skilled and educated software developers to debug and correct the problems. Let us not forget to mention the Supply vs. Demand equation which has negatively affected the IT market for the past couple of years.

Before you rush off and give the task of creating your corporate Web Site to your friends son who'll do it for next to nothing... ask yourself this question... Do I want to be able to call someone to fix or make a minor change to my Web Site next month, next year, or in a couple of years. Do I feel confident that my Web Developer will still be so keen to provide the free services now that I have questions and problems or he/she has gone off to University or graduated from University?

Caveat Emptor

 Web Site or Web Application?
The answer to the question also partly explains why one Web Site costs more than another.
A Web Site that simply acts as an on-line brochure providing a few pages of information about your products and services might be classified as a "Web Site". However a Web Site that provides more than simply static information, for instance, has a product catalogue, interfaces with your supplier's warehouse, supports wireless applications, and manages your on-line order fulfillment processes would most likely be considered a "Web Application". In other-words, you have a Web enabled application software package. Typically Web Applications are much more expensive than their Web Site counterparts, and require more sophisticated web servers to run them. This translates to higher monthly hosting and transactional costs. However the time they save and revenue they generate should more than offset the increased operating costs of a Web Application.
